Careers Corner Launches, Empowering Students to Explore Future Opportunities

The St Leonards Academy is excited to announce the launch of its new Careers Corner, a dedicated space designed to empower students in exploring their future educational and career options. This initiative builds upon the academy’s long-standing commitment to supporting students in preparing for life beyond formal education.

In collaboration with external agencies, the Careers Corner provides a private, resource-rich environment where students can engage with experts and explore pathways tailored to their interests and goals. The space is designed to help students actively shape their futures, offering guidance on career planning and higher education choices.

For students unsure of their career direction, Careers Corner offers support in identifying potential paths based on personal hobbies and interests. The aim is to provide every student with the tools and confidence needed to make informed decisions about their future.

Previously, career guidance was integrated into tutor sessions and assemblies, but this new space allows for a more focused approach. The Careers Corner offers dedicated career interviews for students in Year 9 and Year 11, as well as individual sessions tailored to specific needs. These services are available during both break and lunchtime, providing flexible access for all students.

Billy Thompson, Leader for Enrichment and Extra-Curricular Activities, stated: “We are thrilled to take the next step in enhancing our careers provision. St Leonards Academy has always been proud of its strong career guidance, and with the introduction of Careers Corner, we’re elevating that support even further.”

Principal Jon Francies added: “I am very proud of our careers provision, which has been rated ‘Good’ by OFSTED for personal development. This new resource will further enhance the support we offer to our students.”

The St Leonards Academy and the Mulberry Schools Trust that oversees the academy looks forward to seeing how Careers Corner evolves as an essential part of the school’s student development initiatives in the coming terms.

GCSE Successes for Mulberry Schools Trust Students

This year’s GCSE results have brought pride to the Mulberry Schools Trust, with students from our three secondary academies in East and West Sussex achieving notable successes. These results reflect the hard work, resilience, and dedication of our students, supported by the commitment of their teachers.

In East Sussex, both Hastings and St Leonards Academies have much to be proud of.

Jon Francies, Principal at The St Leonards Academy, remarked: “I am really proud of the St Leonards Academy Class of 2024. During their secondary school education, they have faced significant challenges, particularly through Covid. There have been many strong results, with students achieving the highest possible grades. Crucially, the vast majority of students have secured what they need to move on to their chosen post-16 destinations. We have also seen a significant number of students who previously did not attend, or who joined us from local or out-of-area schools, successfully gain qualifications this year. I wish all our students the best for the future and look forward to welcoming them back in November to celebrate.”

Simon Addison, Principal at The Hastings Academy, expressed his gratitude: “A big thank you to our staff, parents, and carers for their support, and to our students for their commitment and effort. You’ve truly earned these results. Enjoy your success, and don’t forget to stay connected. We wish you every success in the future.”

In West Sussex, The Burgess Hill Academy also acknowledges some significant achievements.

Karen Clinton, Principal at The Burgess Hill Academy, commended the students: “Our students have shown exceptional resilience and dedication throughout their studies. I am pleased to see their efforts rewarded. Congratulations to all of them, and a heartfelt thanks to the staff who have supported them every step of the way.”

Siobhan Denning, Interim Chair of the Board of Trustees for The Mulberry Schools Trust, extends her warm congratulations to all our students for their achievements: “Your hard work and perseverance have paid off, and we are proud of your efforts. As you move forward into the next chapter of your lives, we wish you every success in your future endeavours.”

A Blueprint for Sustainable Food Production at The St Leonards Academy

In an inspiring move towards sustainable agriculture and environmental management, The St Leonards Academy has embarked on an innovative project that is setting a model for schools across the country. An elite group of students are organising the creation of a regenerative food forest, a thriving ecosystem that mimics natural woodland but with a crucial twist: it produces organic fruits and vegetables all year round.

The concept of a regenerative food forest involves the integration of various plant species, including trees, shrubs, vines, and flowers, to create a self-sustaining environment. This green initiative not only absorbs CO2, promoting carbon repossession, but also enhances biodiversity, mitigates flood risks, and contributes to cooling the local climate. Unlike conventional gardens, this food forest requires minimal maintenance once established, as it naturally retains water and nutrients.

Fuelled by waste cardboard and grass clippings, the project exemplifies the transformation of everyday waste into valuable resources.

The benefits of the food forest extend far beyond environmental impact. By providing organic produce throughout the year, the project ensures a steady supply of healthy, fresh food for future generations. The initiative also serves as a practical educational tool, teaching students about ecology, sustainability, and the importance of innovative agricultural practices.

The St Leonards Academy’s Future Growth Project is a testament to the power of youth and education in driving meaningful change. As these young environmentalists cultivate their food forest, they are also nurturing a culture of sustainability and responsibility that will inspire others to follow suit.

Well done, St Leonards!

Hayley Salmon secures £3000 grant under the NHS Healthy Grant Scheme for The St Leonards Academy

We are proud to celebrate the remarkable accomplishment of Hayley Salmon, Attendance Support Practitioner at the Trust, based at The St Leonards Academy in East Sussex. Hayley’s recent success in securing a £3000 grant from the East Sussex Health Team highlights her dedication to enhancing student wellbeing.

The grant, awarded under the NHS Healthy grant scheme, signifies a significant milestone for The St Leonards Academy. In return for this funding, students will participate in a health survey.

What distinguishes Hayley’s achievement is her proactive approach in making this opportunity a reality for The St Leonards Academy. Despite the grant being open to all academies, Hayley’s initiative and commitment ensured its successful gain.

Hayley’s innovative utilisation of the grant has transformed The St Leonards Academy into a hub of mental health and wellbeing resources. From art supplies and therapy Lego sets to weighted blankets and period belts, her efforts encompass a wide array of tools designed to support student growth and empowerment.

Moreover, Hayley’s dedication extends beyond mere provision; she has curated resources that serve as catalysts for meaningful conversations and avenues for personal development. Lavender pads, laptops for office work, puzzles, sensory toys, Lego message boards, magnetic tiles, and an extensive collection of books and card games promoting mental health and self-reflection are among the enriching resources made available to students at the academy.

Hayley’s efforts are ready to make a lasting and positive impact on The St Leonards Academy community for years to come.

The Mulberry Schools Trust extends its heartfelt thank you to Hayley Salmon for what she has implemented at the academy. Congratulations, and well done!
