‘Place2Talk’ is run by the school counsellor from Place2Be. It is a self-referral service offering one off or short intervention for students that feel they need a little more support with their emotional or mental health.

The sessions take place Tuesday to Friday during break one and two and are short 20 minute sessions. Students are welcome to come by themselves or with a friend.

Students can self-refer by emailing needtotalk@thestleonardsacademy.org.uk or asking a teacher to contact Place2Talk directly.

The Nurture approach offers a range of opportunities for children and young people to engage with missing early nurturing experiences, giving them the social and emotional skills to do well at school and with peers, develop their resilience and their capacity to deal more confidently with the trials and tribulations of life, for life.

  • Students do not refer themselves – referrals are made by staff. Places are populated following on from a triage meeting that is led by the Nurture lead.
  • There are 5 trained nurture practitioners and a designated space. We complete Boxall profiles for early identification of potential social, emotional behaviour.
  • Our graduated approach to Nurture ensures that every child in the school has the opportunity to flourish in their education. It ensures that every child has access to the support they need, when they need it. Our nurturing interventions are strategies to support young people to develop social and emotional skills.
  • The Nurture support runs for 6 weeks

Mental Health Matters

At The St Leonards Academy, we recognise it is essential for all our young people to feel supported not only through their learning journeys, but also with their mental wellbeing. We are proud of our team who are committed and dedicated to provide outstanding teaching and learning experiences as well as outstanding support and guidance for all of our young people.

We have also established fantastic relationships with many external agencies who support the academy to both gain knowledge and skills, as well as being able to support young people to access appropriate support services both locally and via the internet tailored to their individual needs.

Each young person has a tutor, who they meet at the start of their school day. The role of the tutor is to build strong trusting relationships  with the students so they are able to support them. Our young people are also supported within their year groups by a head of year and student welfare officers. Both are non-teaching members of staff who are skilled to support our young people’s social and emotional journeys through our academy.

We have our safeguarding team and senior mental health leads. With our whole school approach, staff ensure your child is supported at the academy.

Sleep – Sleep is an essential part of life. Getting regular, good quality sleep is important for our mental and physical health, and can play a big part in regulating our mood. Teenagers need between 8-10 hours sleep a night.

Balanced Diet – We all react differently to things in our diet. However, there are some food and drink that may affect how we feel in different ways. A balanced diet helps us give our bodies what they need. Food and drink with caffeine and high sugar content are stimulants which can give you a quick burst of energy. They can also effect your mood and sleep negatively.

Thoughts and Feelings – Bottling up how we are feeling can have a profound impact on our mental wellbeing. Encourage your child to talk and help them to effectively problem solve.

Be Active – Exercise can help our mental health in many ways, it releases feel good hormones, improves confidence and self-esteem. Other benefits of being active can be improved sleep, help with concentration, reduced stress and anxiety, boosted memory and thinking skills.

Influences – It is important for young people to have positive influences. Ensure your child is not being negatively influenced by others, which may include family members, peers, social media etc. You can do this by creating an open, honest culture at home and making sure you are aware of what they are accessing online.
